The magic of publicity

Rock stars hire people to do it for them.
Movie stars and their studios do, too.
Big corporations hire people to do it.
But small business owners do not.
They don’t think they can afford it.
They don’t know how or realize it value.

What are we talking about?
Free media publicity for your business.

There’s a nugget of truth in the old joke:
“Advertising is what you pay for.
“Free publicity is what you pray for.”
When we publish a new book, we get attention.
That’s because we know how to do it.
Today I’ll share some thoughts on that with you.
But let me first give you an example.
Robin Hudson and his family run two restaurants.
Hudson’s Smokehouse has great barbecue and ribs.
It’s one of our favorites.
It’s a lot of people’s favorites.
His two restaurants are always busy.
His catering business is in high demand, too.

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley and Robin are friends.
She recently lost a bet on a college football game.
The Guv is a graduate of Clemson University.
She bet Clemson would beat Florida State this year.
She lost her bet to Florida Gov. Rick Scott.
Robin packed up ribs and barbecue for 15 people.
He shipped it in dry ice to Tallahassee.
He did it at his own expense.
This was ready-made for national media attention.

We found out and published the story.
Did local TV and the Food Network do anything?
No. They didn’t know about it.

You may have an equally interesting story.
It may be something you think unimportant.
Such as a move to a new location.
A business anniversary or milestone.
A retirement, a new hire or an award.
Saluda River Club just won a Pinnacle Award.
The development has won many awards.
Andy White gets a lot of publicity for that.
And he knows how to do it.
Or he has Betsy Sheppard do it for him.

Savvy public officials do this, too.
Congressman Joe Wilson is an example.
Caroline Delaney sends out his news.
Gov. Nikki Haley knows the value, too.
She has Ron Godfrey do it for her.
Attorney General Alan Wilson as well.
Mark Powell does a good job for him.
Yet some public officials don't do this.
A few won't answer reporters' calls.
How smart do you think that is?
