Do it for love

Our friend Ken Blum has hit on the secret of success.
He’s writing a novel about a hometown paper in the ‘60s.
It’s a story Ken lived with a community newspaper group.
He’s also doing a book on photojournalism’s mental side.
He’s using award-winning photos he shot himself.
All will be printed in sepia for a unique touch.
“It’s a book that I’m doing for myself,” Ken writes.
That’s the secret of doing it — and finishing it.
Write them for yourself and people like yourself,
I know some con artists do it just for the bucks.
But they miss the fun of writing the books.
It’s just work to them. That’s no way to live.
Most of the writers I know do it for themselves first.
Then they share with people like themselves:
1. The great stories they’ve heard.
2. The intriguing things that happen to them.
3. The lessons both have taught them.
If you don’t do it for the love of it, it’s work.
Our friend Joe Pinner says he’s never worked a day in his life.
Of course, Joe loves what he does for a living.

Love what you do

I had almost forgotten this story until lunch the other day.
Joe Pinner, known to millions as Mr. Knozit, made me think of it.
Joe has spent most of his life in broadcasting and loves it.
"I've never had to work a day in my life," Joe says.
As a young reporter, I wrote about a cleaning lady.
She was retiring after 30 years at one of the local TV stations.
Cleaning potties isn't my idea of a fun career.
But this lady loved being around broadcasting people.
They were just local folks but to her they were stars.
At a retirement party, she was asked how she felt on retiring.
"I'm sure going to miss show business," she said.
To her, what she had been doing was important to the business.
Without clean potties, who would want to work there?
Here's the point: If you clean potties, makes them the cleanest.
If you're in show business, make it the best show in town.
Love it and you'll never work a day in your life

Find your passion

Local TV personality Joe Pinner is a lucky man.
Joe knew at age nine that he wanted to be a radio broadcaster.
Radio was big and Joe says he had the perfect face for radio.
Joe started broadcasting in New Bern, N.C. in 1950.
He told the world "This is Joe Pinner and here’s Nat King Cole."
His broadcast career continues in its 60th year.
Joe says he has not worked a day in his life.
He admits a few days have been more trying than others.
"Some by my own stupidity or lack of preparation," he says.
Now in retirement, Joe still airs commercials and weather.
You may not be as lucky as Joe to have found your passion early.
That’s all right. It’s about the journey, not the destination.
Keep hunting. You will find it. I guarantee it.
One clue: What are you exceptionally good at?
It’s probably not "digging ditches" or "selling widgets".
Those who never find it give up too soon. Don’t be like them.
