What if you died tomorrow?

Would you feel you had given this life all you had to give?
Would you feel you had completed your life’s great purpose?
How many people do? How many never find their purpose?
How many go to the grave with their music still inside them?
We’re all put in this life for a great purpose.
Yet we come with no instruction manual.
We have to find our great purpose on our own.
That’s one of life’s great challenges to us.
I wrote "Your Life’s Great Purpose" for one reason only.
To help you find your great purpose.
It took me many years in many jobs to find mine.
I bagged groceries and stocked shelves. Drove trucks.
Ground optical lenses. Delivered newspapers.
Sold insurance. Managed a warehouse and VIP hotel.
None did the trick. Then one day I found it.
It turned me on. It took over my life. It drove me.
I wished someone had given me a book like this years ago.
It would have shortened my own search for meaning.

Are you running on empty?

Do you feel you should be getting more out of your life?
Do small things, inconsequential things get under your skin?
Do you awaken in the dark with feelings of unease?
That there should be something important going on in life?
Believe me, I’ve had those same feelings, too.
No, you’re not on the edge of a nervous breakdown.
You’re just feeling frustrated with the dailiness of life.
Yes, there should be something important going on in your life.
But what is it? What would make a difference? End these feelings?
Until I found my life’s great purpose, I felt your unease.
Then I found my great purpose. It changed me.
It gave me direction. It became a driving force in my life.
You need to find that driving force to power your life.

Can you manage the universe?

I’m off to Atlanta this morning for an interview with Ruth King.
We’ll talk about newsletters as a business-building strategy.
Watch it at 10 a.m.today on ProfitabilityChannel.com
We’ll also tape 17 weekly Business Tips of the Week.
You can see them each Monday on her Internet channel.
Ruth offered me this opportunity more than a year ago,
It has great value to help entrepreneurs. Of course, I said yes.
Not all opportunities do. Analyze each one for value.
Blog reader Bob Bobber passed along this important point.
Bob teaches executives to get more from their time.
Some requests for your time present genuine opportunities.
Some don’t. Analyze them. Ask yourself:
1. Does it have to be done now?
2. Can someone else do it?
3. What happens if I don’t do it?

I would add: Will it help those I want to help?
Many highly-motivated people tend to become martyrs.
They think it is their responsibility to take on everything.
Does your job description read: "Manager of the Universe"?
Mine doesn’t either. Let someone else manage the universe.
You may already have enough on your plate.
You have your great purpose in life to take care of.

The importance of saying ‘no’

Yes, I find it hard to say no. You probably do, too.
I’m lucky. My wife tells me to say no and I do what she wants.
Saying no is hard because we don’t like to disappoint others.
But there are many opportunities in life. We can’t do them all.
You won’t hurt anyone’s feelings if you say no.
Just do it gracefully. Look them in the eyes and smile.
Say, "I’m honored you asked but I just can’t do it now."
That’s all you have to say. Don’t explain. Make no excuses.
Now think about what you’ve just done.
You’ve freed yourself from a commitment you did not want.
Hooray. Freedom is precious. It is not free.
You’ve just made more time for what’s important in your life.
These include your family, friends, fun and important projects.
Don’t fret that you may have missed an important opportunity.
Like buses, another opportunity will come along soon.

Separate the wheat from the chaff

A blog reader sent me a note about his hectic workplace.
It sounds bureaucratic with busy work and interruptions.
I sent seven vital time savers and recommended a closed door.
He sent me an interesting idea you might employ.
He keeps a white board divided into three areas:
1. Things he may not like but must do in his work.
2. Things he’d like to do if he ever gets around to it.
3. The really productive things that will make a difference.
He has one problem. The No. 1s crowd out time for No. 3s.
That has to be frustrating but it’s his own reality.
I used to suffer this symptom when I worked for someone else.
Now I work for myself and only do No. 3s. No more 1s and 2s.
If you are similarly frustrated, here’s a recommendation.
Ditch or delegate the 1s and 2s. The 3s are the big frogs.
They’re the high payoff projects that make a difference.
If you can’t do that where you work, look elsewhere.
When you work for yourself, you work for a tyrant.
But the sense of freedom is liberating to your creativity.
